Money tips
- Carry a card with no foreign-transaction fee plus some MYR cash; Visa and Mastercard work in hotels, malls and chain restaurants, and contactless is common in the cities.
- Hawker stalls, night markets, boat taxis, park fees and small island guesthouses are usually cash-only.
- ATMs are easy to find on the mainland, but the Perhentian Islands have no reliable ATM and Tioman has very few; bring enough cash before the boat.
- Hotels charge foreign guests a tourism tax of MYR 10 per room per night, often collected at check-in on top of the booked rate.
- Restaurant bills often include a service charge and service tax; tipping is not expected.
